Step away from the 'Stack!

2023-09-05

So you want to become a full-stack developer, eh? Look at you, Mister or Missus Knows-it-All. Just kidding!

Calling yourself a full-stack dev these days is like saying you’re a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none. Not exactly something to write home about.

But in all seriousness, this whole full-stack developer label has gotten out of hand. Companies throw it around thinking it means you can single-handedly build them a flawless web app from front to back. Recruiters demand full-stack ninjas like they grow on trees. And junior devs are told it’s the golden ticket to getting hired.

The truth is, being a full-stack developer is messy business. It used to mean having skills in both front-end and back-end web development. But now companies expect full-stack devs to know 87 different JavaScript frameworks, master a dozen programming languages, and be DevOps engineers to boot.

Oh, and did I mention you should be an expert in blockchain, AI, quantum computing, and the dark arts of content creation?

Where does it end? The full-stack developer door swings both ways.

With platforms like SvelteKit blurring the lines between front-end and back-end, being a well-rounded web developer is certainly important. But trying to master everything is a fool’s errand. The tech landscape evolves too rapidly for anyone to be an expert in all aspects of development.

Instead of chasing the mythological full-stack developer title, focus on learning related skills that excite you. Build projects that let you experiment across the stack. But don’t kill yourself trying to check every box on a hiring manager’s wish list.

At the end of the day, they want someone who can build solid, scalable products. You don’t need to be a development demigod to do that. So step away from the 'stack and move toward a career path that plays to your passions. Your mental health and imposter syndrome will thank you.
